The Tower of Pisa is nothing more than the bell tower for the cathedral. However it has become much more popular and famous due to its leaning, a result of many errors and defects both of construction and maintenance. The tower is more than 55 metres tall, and starts vertically but soon becomes famously inclined. The internal spiral staircase has 294 stairs.



After a lot of work, investigation and problems, the Italian government decided to ask for help in 1964 to stop it falling down. In 1990 it was closed to the public for security reasons, and was reopened in 2001 after a detailed rebuilding and recostruction and a reduction in its angle of inclination. Experts now say it will be stable for at le4ast the next 300 years.
